📋Overview

Overview

Century Park is located at 1001 Jinxiu Road, Pudong New Area, Shanghai. It borders Fangdian Road to the east and covers approximately 140.3 hectares, equivalent to about 250 standard football fields. It is the largest ecological urban park within Shanghai’s Inner Ring Road and a highly representative "urban green heart" of Pudong. The park’s site was originally farmland and village homes in Yangjing Town and Huamu Town of Chuansha County. With the development and opening-up of Pudong, the park was officially planned at the end of 1993, initially named "Pudong Central Park." Its design concept focused on "harmonious coexistence between humans and nature" and "integration of Eastern and Western cultures." Construction began in 1996 and was basically completed by 1999. On April 18, 2000, it was officially renamed "Century Park," symbolizing the new Pudong’s cross-century development. Since then, the park was rated a national AAAA-level tourist attraction in 2002 and was awarded "Shanghai Five-Star Park" status in 2023, making it one of the most prominent parks in Shanghai.

From a high vantage point (such as the rest area by the windows on the upper floors of the Shanghai Museum East Building opposite), Century Park presents a typical lake-ring structure: centered around the "Magic City’s first man-made lake," Jingtian Lake, surrounded by a lakeside walking path, and further encircled by an approximately 5-kilometer outer running loop, resembling a green circular brooch embedded in the Pudong CBD. Bridges such as Lake Heart Island, Wobo Bridge, Anliu Bridge, and Hongjin Bridge, along with the winding lakeshore, create rich water scenery layers. The park offers both large-scale urban landscapes and waterside trails and grassy slopes close to the water.

The park’s plant landscape is extremely rich, truly achieving "seasonal themes all year round": late winter to early spring features wintersweet, plum blossoms, and large plum gardens; spring brings seas of poppies, ox-eye daisies, pansies, osmanthus, Chinese fringe flowers, magnolia city flower forests, and more; summer is lush and green, serving as a city oasis for escaping the heat; autumn is dominated by the 2-kilometer Ginkgo Avenue, lakeside plane tree avenue, red maples, and bald cypresses, earning it the nickname "Shanghai’s own Central Park" by many bloggers. Additionally, there are themed areas such as the native countryside zone, children’s farming farm, Pudong state-owned enterprise forest, and Fang Garden, combining science education, sightseeing, and leisure functions.

Beyond natural scenery, Century Park is an important venue for citizen exercise and family activities. The park’s approximately 5-kilometer running loop is known among runners as "Shanghai’s most beautiful running track," popular in the early morning and evening. Facilities inside the park include a children’s powered playground, non-powered children’s playground, children’s farming farm, lakeside mini train, electric boats, and kayaks, making it a "best spot for friends’ photo shoots + a paradise for kids." Large open groves and lawns, including the "internet-famous big lawn," allow daytime camping and picnicking. Tents, canopies, and picnic mats almost "cover" the grass on weekends, making it a classic weekend "relaxation spot" for Shanghai residents.

In recent years, Century Park has continuously introduced cultural activities and new experiences: in spring, there are events like the "Century Park Plum Blossom Festival" and "Double Plum Festival," featuring a New Year folk food market, plum blossom-themed tea art, New Year folk music concerts, and Song brocade plum blossom DIY workshops; in winter, near Gate 1, a free New Year lantern fair has been held, turning strawberries, nut gift boxes, and huadiao wine into giant glowing lanterns, becoming a popular New Year check-in spot. The park is also surrounded by cultural and commercial facilities such as the Shanghai Museum East Building, Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, Kerry City Pudong, and Huamu Li Time, forming an integrated urban leisure circle of "park + museum + mall." The overall atmosphere combines the modernity of a big city with a rare sense of natural relaxation, making it one of the ideal places in Shanghai to experience the "20-minute park effect."

🌸Best Season

Best Seasons to Visit

Overview of the Four Seasons

Century Park truly lives up to the claim of "having highlights in all four seasons," but the themes and activities vary greatly with each season. Overall, February–March (plum blossom viewing), April–May (spring flowers), and October–November (autumn colors) are the three absolute peak seasons. Summer is ideal for evening cool-downs and night views, while winter suits city walks and running.

Late Winter to Early Spring (January–March): Wintersweet and Plum Blossom Season

  • Wintersweet Peak: Late January to Mid-February
Multiple photos from February 2026 show that the wintersweet near Gate 1 and Gate 7 is over 90% in full bloom, with golden branches and a strong, subtle fragrance. The Red Gate Screen Wintersweet, Gate 7 Screen Wintersweet, and Red Gate Wintersweet Garden have a strong traditional Chinese atmosphere; around Gate 1, wintersweet intermingles with white and red plum blossoms, perfect for detailed close-up shots.
  • Plum Blossom Main Season: Late February to Mid-March
Red plum, fragrant snow plum, beauty plum, green calyx plum, and others bloom successively. The Century Plum Garden, Chongqing Plum Garden, Fragrant Snow Plum Path, Plum Viewing Area, Plum Sea Exhibition Area, and Juyu Garden connect to form a vast sea of plum blossoms. The 2026 "Double Plum Festival" runs from February 7 to March 15, featuring supporting events like the "Century Park Plum Viewing Fair," New Year folk food market, plum blossom-themed tea ceremonies, New Year folk music concerts, and Song brocade plum blossom DIY workshops, creating a rich cultural atmosphere.
  • Recommended For & Experiences: Ideal for outings with elders, Hanfu/ancient style photo shoots, couples’ dates, and family flower viewing. Expect larger crowds during the Spring Festival holiday and weekends; weekdays or early mornings and evenings are recommended to avoid peak times.

Spring (April–May): Sea of Poppies and Agastache Flowers

  • Flower Sea Peak: Around Mid-April
Photos show large flower seas in the park’s Qionghua Forest, Magnolia City Flower Forest, Yuanchi Viewing Platform, Local Pastoral Area, Vegetable Garden, and around Chaofu Pavilion: poppies, wood sorrel, pansies, agastache, qionghua, snapdragons, and more take turns blooming. The agastache flower waterfall in the Vegetable Garden can be shot alongside wisteria, while the facade and wooden fences outside Chaofu Pavilion are "drowned" in agastache flowers, creating a striking visual impact.
  • Climate & Pace: Temperatures are comfortable, perfect for a 2–3 hour brisk walk through the flower seas, suitable for both photography and leisurely strolls. Note that the Vegetable Garden is closed on Mondays (open Tuesday–Sunday 9:00–18:00), so avoid Mondays when photographing agastache.
  • Recommended For & Experiences: Photography enthusiasts, girlfriends’ outings, couples’ dates, and family spring outings; great to pair with picnics and afternoon tea.

Summer (June–September): Lake Breeze and Family Water Activities

  • Scenic Features: The greenery is lushest, with the Mirror Sky Lake shimmering, and shaded forest paths providing excellent shelter—an urban oasis for summer cooling. Ideal for water and sightseeing activities such as electric boats, kayaks, and the lake loop mini train. The children’s power playground and farming experience farm are also most popular during this time.
  • Timing Suggestions: Strong sunlight during the day; it’s best to visit after 4 PM or in the evening to avoid heat, enjoy the sunset, and catch the music fountain (some years have weekend night openings in summer).
  • Notes: Mosquitoes are relatively abundant; bring mosquito repellent, sunscreen, and sun hats.

Autumn (October–December): Ginkgo and Phoenix Tree Autumn Highlights

  • Ginkgo Avenue: Located near Jinxiu Road in the Local Pastoral Area, the approximately 2-kilometer ginkgo tunnel is best viewed from late October to November. Fallen leaves are not cleared, forming a golden carpet, perfect for Japanese-style portraits and family photos. Photos from mid to late November 2025 show that entering from Gate 7 and turning right reveals about 60% yellow ginkgo trees.
  • Phoenix Tree Avenue and Red Maple & Dawn Redwood: Along the lakeside Phoenix Tree Avenue, Hongjin Bridge Trail, and near Anliu Bridge, red maples and dawn redwoods change color in mid to late November, glowing golden and reddish copper under sunlight. The interplay of lake light and tree shadows has been called an "autumn light bomb" by bloggers.
  • Camping Atmosphere: The crisp autumn air makes the lakeside large lawn and west lawn areas excellent for camping, but avoid the lawn maintenance period from October 8 to November 15, during which some camping areas are closed.

Winter (December–January of the Following Year): Crisp City Walk and Running Season

  • Scenic Atmosphere: Plants are relatively quiet, but the lake and shaded paths have a distinct crisp beauty, perfect for quiet walks, running, and minimalist photography. If you catch events like the New Year Lantern Festival, the night scene atmosphere is very strong.
  • Feel & Protection: Winds near the water are strong, making the perceived temperature lower, especially after 3–4 PM when it cools noticeably. Visiting around noon is best; dress warmly and protect against wind.

Overall Timing Recommendations

  • Peak Season Picks: February–March for plum blossoms, April–May for spring flowers, and October–November for autumn colors are the most worthwhile times to visit.
  • Off-Peak Strategy: Weekends and holidays are crowded; it’s best to visit on weekdays or on weekends before 9:30 AM or after 4 PM to avoid crowds and enjoy softer lighting.

Plum branches intertwine to form an archway, creating a natural plum blossom tunnel. Walking through feels like entering a sea of flowers, a popular spot for portraits and video shoots.

  • Tanmei Area (探梅区)

Several meticulously pruned plum trees at the entrance are perfect for portraits and traditional-style photography. Early peach blossoms before the Spring Festival add extra layers.

During the plum blossom festival, hosts plum-themed tea ceremonies, New Year folk music concerts, Song brocade plum DIY, and other activities. A great place for cultural experiences and rest while enjoying the blossoms.

5. Spring Flower Seas and Special Floral Scenes

  • Qionghua Forest (琼花林)
Located between Gates 2 and 1, known as "Shanghai’s hidden Qionghua flower sea." Large areas of white Qionghua create a floral corridor, complemented by railings and benches for excellent composition. Few people and beautiful scenery make it ideal for quiet spring portraits.

  • Magnolia City Flower Forest (玉兰市花林)
Spread between Gates 2 and 3, featuring large spring flower seas of Coreopsis (喜林草) and poppies (虞美人). A small wooden house covered in yellow wood fragrance (黄木香) sits in the middle, allowing simultaneous shots of poppies, Coreopsis, and yellow wood fragrance. Mid-April is the best time.

  • Yuanchi Viewing Platform (缘池观景台)
Located between Gates 2 and 3, it is the core vantage point of a large poppy flower sea. A walkway extends into the flower sea, suitable for portraits and overhead shots, often included in spring flower sea routes.

  • Native Countryside Area Snapdragon Seven-Color Flower Sea
The native countryside area has a seven-color snapdragon flower field, which can be shot from a small hill behind for an aerial view of the "seven-color flower sea." Nearby is a poppy flower sea with almost no tree trunks blocking the view, creating a clean composition. Popular for friends’ afternoon tea and countryside-style photos.

  • Vegetable Garden Yellow Wood Fragrance + Wisteria Composite Floral Scene
The vegetable garden features a yellow wood fragrance flower waterfall combined with wisteria, creating a strong visual contrast of "yellow + purple." Note that the vegetable garden is closed on Mondays and open Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

  • Chaofu Pavilion Yellow Wood Fragrance Flower Waterfall
Near Gate 7, the Chaofu Pavilion’s exterior and the northern back wooden fence are covered with yellow wood fragrance vines. The flower waterfall hangs down in mid-April, with excellent backlighting in the morning and front lighting in the afternoon, making it an important spot on the spring flower sea route.

  • Sparse Forest Lawn Area and Riverside Garden Pansies
Large areas of pansies are planted in the sparse forest lawn and riverside garden, perfect for sitting on the grass and taking portraits with a naturally soft background.

6. Autumn Ginkgo and Phoenix Tree Avenue

  • Ginkgo Avenue
Located on the side of Jinxiu Road in the native countryside area, about 2 km long. The best viewing period is late October to November. The park does not sweep fallen leaves, creating a golden carpet ideal for Japanese-style photo shoots and family portraits. Weekday mornings have the fewest people, making it an ideal time for off-peak photography.

  • Phoenix Tree Avenue
The classic sections are mainly two: one near Manner Coffee by the lake, and another on the Zhangjiabang side of Hongjin Bridge. In mid to late November, the phoenix tree leaves turn golden yellow and reddish copper under sunlight, combined with lake views and lawns, praised by many bloggers as an "autumn light bomb."

  • Red Maple and Bald Cypress Accents
Red maples and ginkgo trees line the Hongjin Bridge trail, offering rich color layers. The "Lonely Red Bald Cypress" near Anliu Bridge shows unique reddish-brown hues in autumn and winter, a niche but highly recognizable photo spot.

Open 24 hours with good lighting and pavement conditions, a popular choice for night running and walking.

Practical Tips and Precautions

1. Recommended Visiting Times and Off-Peak Suggestions

  • Plum Blossom Viewing: Recommended on sunny days in mid to late February, with soft light and dewy flowers from 9:00–11:00 AM; the colors are most saturated from 2:00–4:00 PM, and you can try shooting plum blossom silhouettes at dusk.

  • Spring Flower Viewing: The flower sea is at its peak in mid-April; the best time is 3:00–5:00 PM, with backlighting perfect for photographing yellow osmanthus, poppies, and xilin grass.

  • Autumn Leaf Viewing: From late October to mid-November, weekday mornings have the fewest visitors; in the afternoon, the slanting sun shines on the ginkgo and phoenix tree avenues, creating the strongest golden filter effect.

  • Camping and Picnicking: The most comfortable times are 2:30–6:30 PM in spring and autumn; in summer, try to arrive closer to evening; in winter, midday is best, as it feels colder after 3 or 4 PM.

  • Avoid Peak Times: The Spring Festival holiday, weekends during the plum blossom peak, weekends in the April flower sea season, and weekends during the November autumn peak see very large crowds. It’s best to choose weekdays or Friday afternoons; on weekends, try to enter the park before 9:30 AM or after 4:00 PM.

  • Entrance Choices: Gates 1 and 7 are the most popular and may have queues and tight parking on holidays. Consider entering from Gate 2 or Gate 3 and touring in reverse to disperse crowds.

  • Off-Peak Plum Garden Visits: The Century Plum Garden and Plum Sea Exhibition Area are the busiest. For clean portraits, prioritize Jinyu Garden (箟愉园), Tanmei Area (探梅区), and Chongqing Plum Garden (重庆梅园), or visit after rain or on cloudy days for a more atmospheric feel.

  • Off-Peak Ginkgo Avenue Visits: Weekday mornings have the fewest people; on weekends, enter early to photograph the ginkgo before resting on the lawn.

2. Clothing and Gear Suggestions

  • Spring and Autumn: Light-colored clothing (white, cream, light khaki, light pink, etc.) complements the flower seas and ginkgo backgrounds; bring a light jacket for wind protection.
  • Winter: The wind near the water is strong, making it feel much colder than downtown. Be sure to wear a hat, scarf, and warm coat, especially for long plum blossom viewing or picnics.
  • Summer: Essential items include a sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and sun-protective clothing. Try to enter the park in the evening to avoid midday sun exposure.
  • Camping/Picnicking: Recommended to bring a picnic mat, lightweight tent or canopy, small speaker, playing cards/board games, trash bags, tissues, wet wipes, mosquito repellent, power bank, etc. If you lack gear, consider third-party rental services.

3. Photography and Equipment Tips

  • Plum Blossoms and Wintersweet: Use a large aperture (f/1.8–2.8) to blur the background; choose backlight or side backlight to let petals glow. In Jinyu Garden, use white walls, gray tiles, and flower windows as framing; at Gate 7’s red door wintersweet, use the vermilion gate and red lanterns as foreground or background.
  • Lake Views and Skyline: When shooting the “sky mirror” at Jingtian Lake, get close to the water surface for a low angle and choose windless or slightly breezy days. Include the Lujiazui “three-piece set” and lake reflections to enhance the city vibe.
  • Flower Sea Portraits: At Yuanchi Viewing Platform, Magnolia City Flower Forest, and Rural Pastoral Area, avoid stepping on flowers by standing on paths or lawn edges; use a medium telephoto lens to compress the flower sea. For overhead shots, stand on small hills or viewing platforms to fill the frame with flowers.
  • Autumn Portraits: When shooting on Phoenix Tree Avenue and Ginkgo Avenue, have subjects face backlight, use fallen leaves as foreground, and increase shutter speed to avoid blur.
  • Mobile Photography: Use portrait mode + HDR; post-edit with VSCO, Lightroom, etc., to moderately enhance contrast and saturation. For video, pair with an action camera to record city walks.

4. Safety and Park Rules

  • Drone Restrictions: The park is crowded, and flying drones at low altitude or over crowds is strictly prohibited. There have been incidents of drones hitting visitors’ heads, posing serious safety risks. If aerial photography is necessary, strictly follow regulations and stay away from crowded areas.
  • Camping and Lawns: Tents may only be set up in designated lawn areas; comply with camping times and lawn maintenance periods, and avoid activities in closed lawns. Always take all trash with you to keep lawns clean.
  • Water Safety: Keep a close eye on children near lakes, pebble beaches, and kayak docks to prevent falls into the water. Always wear life jackets when taking boats or kayaks.
  • Pet Policy: Pets are not allowed inside the park; dog walking is only permitted in the park’s outer ring or other designated areas.

5. Facilities and Service Tips

  • Restrooms: There are about 12 restrooms evenly distributed throughout the park, mostly within a few minutes’ walk of major attractions, so no worries when visiting with kids.
  • Convenience Stores and Vending Machines: Several small shops and vending machines offer drinks, snacks, and self-service ice cream. Prices are slightly higher than city convenience stores, so it’s recommended to bring some water and simple food.
  • Takeout Pickup: You can order takeout to park entrances (such as Gate 7 or Gate 2), exit the park to pick it up, then re-enter. Be sure to watch your belongings when picking up food.
  • Information Access: Follow official WeChat accounts like “Century Park (世纪公园)” and “Shanghai Greening and City Appearance (上海绿化市容)” for the latest flower updates, events, and open area info. To experience “Radish Express (萝卜快线),” download the “Radish Run (萝卜快跑)” mini-program in advance.

6. Money-Saving Tips and Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Saving Money: Admission is free, so you can enjoy picnics, walks, and photography without spending on any attractions. For boat rides or bicycles, share costs with friends. Buy drinks and snacks outside the park at convenience stores or supermarkets when possible.
  • Common Pitfalls:
    • The Vegetable Garden is closed on Mondays in spring, so don’t go specifically on Monday to shoot yellow osmanthus.
    • The lawn maintenance period is from October 8 to November 15 in autumn; some camping areas are closed—check before you go.
    • Parking is extremely difficult on weekends during plum blossom and autumn peak seasons; take the metro instead.
    • Temperatures drop sharply after 3 or 4 PM in winter; allow time to pack up when picnicking or camping to avoid catching a cold.

7. Mindset and Pace Suggestions

  • No need to rush to “check in at every spot.” It’s better to slowly enjoy by theme: come just for a plum blossom viewing, a flower sea, a stroll along the ginkgo avenue, or an afternoon relaxing on the lawn.
  • If you live nearby or visit Pudong often, treat Century Park as a “daily park,” unlocking new routes and photo spots in different seasons, making it part of your life rather than just a one-time attraction.
